Valentine's Day Eve

Amanda and I are both entirely too busy to enjoy the Hallmark holiday today, so instead we made reservations to go out to eat last night at the Ruth's Chris Steakhouse near where we live. Even better than that, Amanda had been awarded some gift cards of her choice, so nearly all of the meal was paid for before we even showed up and it was a nice chance to get out and celebrate.

On days like that, I like to sit back and really remember who we are and who we were, how we got to where we are and why our relationship works. So during the course of many conversations and for once an accident-free dinner without any ice-water tsunamis, a lobster thrust in my face or too much flesh searing on the steakhouses 500 F plates, we came on the topic of luckiness.

I think both of us are very fortunate and blessed to have found the right match after years of searching and I thank God every day for the relationship that we have. But Amanda mentioned that I was a lucky person to catch someone like her. I immediately disagreed. It's not that she isn't great, quite the contrary, but I never went fishing for someone in the first place and I certainly never caught her. I just stumbled into this relationship and every day made us stronger and more determined to make it work. In the end, I think all of us can search as much as we want for our soulmate, but you can't just reach out and grab them; if you did, they wouldn't be your soulmate. Instead, it's about what works between you and whether your spouse jumps into your boat as opposed to catching them.

Being a Sesame Street kid from back when the days were good, that analogy immediately brought to mind Bert and Ernie in the boat trying to catch fish without poles because of the similarity to my disagreement with "catching" Amanda. So as much for Amanda's own benefit (I promised to find this for her) as to my general readership, I include the video below.

Happy Valentine's Day to everyone and I hope you have a chance to celebrate it either today or someday soon with the one you love.
